How Essential Oil Can Relieve Insomnia and Stress?


Smell has all the power to keep you relaxed and stress-free. The olfactory nerve is responsible for bringing us our sense of smell. It starts with our nose and enters into the skull to connect with our brain.

This olfactory nerve is responsible for sending signals to various parts of the brain. It also sends signals to the limbic system, which is responsible for emotion, mood, and memory. This system also takes care of our reactions to any actions. Like you drag your hand from a hot object, a school level example that we all have learned.


The limbic system sends signals to the brain to drag the hand, and the reaction is taken. Such a fight-or-flight response leads to a quickening of our heartbeats, thus increasing the blood pressure. The limbic system also soothes our nervous system, which relaxes our body.

The effect of smell is spontaneous, as per some studies. It induces quick physical activities. Essential oils used in the aromatherapy that relax our body, if mixed with ingredients having such smell, can do wonders.

Humans have always been known to find an alternative. Just like finding allopathic medicines as an alternative to ayurvedic medicines, humans found aromatherapy as an alternative.  It relaxes our body, brain, mind, and spirit and prevents us from taking massive doses of paracetamol.

Studies that are done throughout the world have shown that when essential oils in aromatherapy are mixed with water to dilute it and sprinkled in the air, it will keep people cherished. Also, it will keep your body relaxed, brain chilled, stress is relieved, and you get a night of better sleep.

The essential oils in the aromatherapy, when blended with below- mentioned organic substances having smell could level-up the chances of the body being relaxed and can move individuals in nice sweet, dreamy sleep. Here is a list of smelling materials that you can mix with the essential oils. Usually, you can buy the essential oils mixed with these substances directly from the market. You don’t have to mix it separately.

a.      Lavender essential oil

Lavender essential oil is the best and at the top of our list. It has all the ingredients required to keep your body safe from any stress. Also, a study reveals that it contains content that relaxes your nervous system. Thus reducing the heart rate, decreasing the blood pressure, and giving you a sweet stress-free sleep.

Lavender also holds a quality of reducing your Insomnia. Lavender is also meant to reduce your anxiety either for a patient at the time of any major operations or during the preparational phase of the doctor to prepare for the operation.

Lavender aromatherapy is generally safe, and it does not cause any harm unless you are allergic to Lavender. It would be best if you got in touch with any general physician before applying Lavender essential oil on your body.

b.      Bergamot essential oil

Citrus Bergamot is a hybrid fruit that resembles a blend of lime and orange. It is especially utilized to create natural Bergamot essential oil.

It was earlier used in the Italic medicines. However, the latest studies reveal that it has all the ability to relieve tension and stress. It is an anti-anxiety essential oil.

Many studies were done between 2009 and 2013. It suggested that Bergamot essential oil is capable of reducing heart rate, decreasing blood pressure, and removing the stress.

c.       Jasmine essential oil

Jasmine has a sweet smell, which, when mixed with essential oil, can be used in aromatherapy to relax the patient. There haven’t been many profound kinds of research done on Jasmine, but its fragrance gives a relieving effect. The odor of Jasmine tea can keep you calm and away from stress.

d.      Clary Sage essential oil

Clary sage essential oil is extracted from the herb named Clary sage, which is a close native of the garden sage herb. Clary sage essential oil can reduce the pressure and relax a patient during the medical procedures.

When you are depressed and need some aromatherapy, then prefer taking clary sage essential oil aromatherapy. It has an antidepressant effect that keeps you away from any depression.


There are many essential oils you may find better than the ones we listed. But remember, we have tried to bring the best and popularly used essential oils on our list.

Likely, you might have heard about Ylang Ylang essential oil or Yuzu Yu essential, which also clears your stress. However, we don’t have that many studies of the past that prove it. So before opting for any essential oil, we would recommend you to go through all the ingredients it has, and if possible, take the suggestion of a local physician.
