Types of oil that are good or bad for health


Here’s one of the lesser-known facts- The oil that you use for cooking decides a lot about your health. Most of the oils are a rich source of fats. Over the years, a common myth that has surrounded many people is “Fats are bad for health”.However, the truth is, not all types of fats are harmful. Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are essential macronutrients responsible for boosting energy, protecting organs, keeping the body warm and many other important functions. On the other hand, trans fat and saturated fats are harmful to the body.


Let us have a quick look at types of oil that are good for health

·    Olive oil- Extensively used in Indian households, olive oil is a rich source of healthy monounsaturated fats. It reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease and strokes. Most importantly, olive oil doesn’t lead to serious health conditions that include obesity and weight gain. It is also the safest oil to use for people suffering from Type 2 diabetes.

·     Avocado oil- Another source of healthy fatty acids, avocado oil boosts the level of healthy cholesterol. Due to its high smoke point, this oil is typically used for high-temperature cooking.

·      Canola oil- Due to the presence of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in canola oil, it is one of the healthiest cooking oil. Canola oil is rich in vitamin E and vitamin K, therefore it also reduces skin problems like acne and wrinkles.

Now that we’ve discussed healthy oils, let’s have a look at the types of oil we should stay away from
Palm oil- High in saturated fat, palm oil increases the risk of heart diseases.  It can lead to health complications in diabetics. It is advisable to limit the use of palm oil for a healthy living.

Coconut oil- Though not as harmful as palm oil, coconut oil has its own side-effects. Excessive use of coconut oil on a regular basis can increase the level of LDL cholesterol, which is harmful to health.

The increase in cholesterol can bring various health complications.
